Achebe has always seemed to me the essential Nigerian writer. (Amos Tutuola is too, but you can’t really get Tutuola unless you have lived South of the Sahara for at least a few years).
Achebe understands Nigeria’s multi-cultural, multi-ethnic, multi-religion roots more deeply than any other author I know; and is able to contemplate the many frictions of Nigerian society without going to the silly end of optimism about it.
This makes most of his best writing tragic, but it also makes it urgent.
Arrow of God probably isn’t the best place to start with Achebe, but if you care about Africa and its future, you need to start somewhere.
