This is the Casanova of The Leads, not the Casanova of the Diaries; it would be worth reading for that consideration alone.
But Marai has also written an Anti-Fascist novel the Fascists couldn’t understand, and you should probably take seriously any author who still has the elan to commit suicide in his late 80s.
Marai is a fascinating figure in so many respects. This probably isn’t his best novel, but it’s one of the less strange ones.
