In this “vital novel that arrives at a perilous time” (Elliot Ackerman, New York Times bestselling author), a disillusioned American veteran volunteers for the war in Ukraine to reconnect with a woman from his past.
Thirty-three-year-old Luke “Pax” Paxton has been out of the military for almost a decade, adrift in an America he no longer understands, haunted by a mistake made in an unforgiving moment of combat. When an old army friend suggests they travel to Ukraine to help fight against the Russian invasion, he agrees, and together they cross an ocean to Lviv, the City of Lions. But Pax isn’t merely going out of the goodness of his heart. He carries with him the address of a former love, a Ukrainian woman named Svitlana whom he had known as a young soldier and has been unable to forget.
His feverish journey through Lviv takes him down winding and missile-cratered streets as he forms surprising connections with everyone from humanitarian volunteers to displaced Ukrainians and ordinary citizens trying to survive. And when Pax gets the chance to save someone dear to Svitlana, he just might be able to correct the wrongs that have wracked him with guilt for so many years.
Inspired by the author’s time in Ukraine, “Matt Gallagher has written the first great military-inspired novel of this post-Global War on Terror era” (Bill McCloud, author of What Should We Tell Our Children About Vietnam?).

I haven’t read this book, but I can suggest a plot for the next one:
In Lviv, Pax sees that people are suffering from far-right radicals and a corruption.
He meets two young people Mikola and Taras, who dream of being free from the tyranny of extremists in the Ukrainian government.
Pax helps them cross the border and escape from a country that has turned into a prison.

I think the Russian invasion is a bigger problem than far-right radicals and a corruption.

Currently Ukrainians in the Zaporozhye and Kherson regions can live as before. Or they can sell the property and move away. Russia does not restrict movement and does not force people to join the army in those regions.
Ukrainians in Lviv who evade military service cannot sell their property and legally leave the country. And every time they go outside they risk being literally kidnapped by people in military clothing. There are dozens of videos of how this happens.
In my opinion, if you are Ukrainian and just want to be as far away from the war as possible, then the far-right radicals and the Ukrainian government are your main enemies.
So the plot of the first comment looks quite plausible)

@mytmpmail2015 If I were Ukrainian, I would want my country free from people that try to annex large parts of it at any cost.

Most of the population of eastern Ukraine considers Russian their native language, and the government is forcing to switch to Ukrainian.
Most of the population of Ukraine had ancestors who served in the Soviet army, and the government glorifies people who fought against the Soviet army (Bandera, Shukhevych, etc.)
Despite the war, the government changes the names of streets (hundreds of streets all over the country) and small towns, because the historical names contradict modern narratives.
If you had Ukrainian citizenship, there is a high chance that you would consider the current Ukrainian government an occupier)

Oh! English is the native language of people of USA, so the logic is the same for GB to take over America? What a world view!

@zaitech90
I’d like to add a few details to your analogy to make it more accurate.
Let’s imagine that there was a coup d’état in the USA. New “government” declared:
- the use of English in any establishment is illegal and punishable by a fine or dismissal
- books, films, and television in English are prohibited
- trading, travel or other dealings with the GB is illegal
- any politician opposed to the new government is illegal (and a lot of them left the country, went to jail or were killed)
- any journalist who criticizes the new government is illegal (some were killed or imprisoned)
- children at school should be taught that GB is an eternal enemy and must be destroyed
- military bases need to be built on the border with GB
- coup participants go to Canada to stage a coup there (analogy to events in Belarus in 2020)
- European countries fully support, finance and to some extent control the new USA government.
I am against any violence, but in this imaginary situation if I were GB, I would be worried
