The title story is about a fruit seller, Rahmat from Kabul, Afghanistan, who visits Calcutta each year to sell dry fruits. While living in India, he develops a filial affection for a five-year-old girl, Mini, from a middle-class aristocratic family, who reminds him of his own daughter back home in Afghanistan.

The Hungry Stones is about a tax collector, Srijut, who is sent to a small town and stays at a former palace which is believed to be haunted. Every night, he becomes more consumed by the spirits of the inhabitants of the palace from the Mughal times and a beautiful woman.

The Victory follows Shekhar, the court poet of the kingdom Amarapur, who is challenged by another poet to a war of words.

The Post Office is a play about Amal, a child confined to his adoptive uncle’s home by an incurable disease. He stands in the courtyard and talks to passers-by, asking about the places they go. The construction of a new post office nearby prompts the imaginative Amal to fantasize about receiving a letter from the King or being his postman.
