Our journey through the arc and pages of a book is often in the safe and knowing words of a narrator. But sometimes these friends, these guardians of our trust play games, they betray our literary friendship with lines on which we can’t rely. They take us into literary mazes turn characters we accept into those we mistrust, situations we know into something we can now only doubt. However, we still enjoy the journey; sometimes they make it so much fun there may be a happy ending. But often there isn’t. I did say they were unreliable.

I would advise the man on the cover that, to beat a (fair) maze, just keep turning left. This has got Caesar out of many a labyrinth.
However, if it’s more of a metaphysical maze - as the 1 on the cover appears to be - I would deploy the trusted formula of “Don’t go in, you twat.”

Does ‘The Lifted Veil’ have an unreliable narrator? I don’t usually read it that way, though I accept you can get a different story by taking that approach.
The narrator is not omniscient (I can’t think of any George Eliot with an omniscient narrator, not even Romola), but a narrator can still be bona fide withing his limitations.
But most of these are worth reading, whether the narrator is reliable or not, so thanks for the upload.

“fair maze”?
First time I have seen you speak out of your depth.
The maze in which your strategy would work, is called a “simple maze”; where all the walls are connected to the bounding wall. There is nothing unfair in having a maze with ‘islands’ that are not connected to the boundary wall.

Ought I have said “tricky” maze? In the intentional sense? In any event, correction cheerfully accepted.
