  Yes, I’m just interested in holy books. I’ve gone through the bible (some nice passages but too long and repetitive), Koran (badly edited and repetitive), Book of Mormon (awful pastiche of the bible), Bhagavad Gita (not bad, succinct and some memorable passages), etc. But they’re all BS.

  From what I’ve read of the Granth I’d say it has way too much hymns and peons and not enough philosophy or mythology or something of real interest.

  I had to get another person to make that tea for me, I was trembling so bad. It was like Screamin’ Dick Dawkins put down his “Why I love Eugenics, and the people who have implemented it” tome, and tossed off (ahem) a few ill-advised book reports. (Insert pro forma, takeback smiley face here)

  The problem with most scriptures is that their structure is of the form:

  Assertion. Assertion. Assertion.

  A good philosophical text looks more like this:

  Premise. Assertion. Conclusion. Then questions the premises, looks at alternatives, and possible errors and counter-arguments. Even science follows this form. If you don’t support your assertions from outside the system then you run the risk of making a circular argument of the sort:
  1.) Say you assert, “The devil is the one that impels you to do evil things.”
  I say “I don’t believe the devil exists.”
  And you respond that “That’s what the devil wants you to believe.”
  2.) You psychologist says that your fear of flying stems from a traumatic childhood experience relating to your desire to kill your father and marry your mother. After multiple attempts to recover these memories you respond that you deny that your fear is from some oedipus complex. To which the psychologist responds that you’re just in denial.
  3.) God exists because the bible says that he exists.
  4.) Marxists say that the proletariat’s surplus value is stolen by the bourgeoisie exploit the proles and cause them to suffer alienation. But you say that you don’t mind your boss making his paycheck because you could also have come up the business idea and could have been in his boots. To this the Marxist replies that you suffer from a false consciousness.

  In conclusion, don’t make blanket assertions and support your claims from outside the system. Holy Writ patently fails to do this.

  Sikh way of life is to feed people. But they carry a huge EGO for doing so. They wear turban to show off their beliefs and carry knife. They are warrior class people who have to have huge EGO to fight enemies. This EGO is seen in their day to day life too. Too much greed for success and showing off, a kind of social war to show superiority. There is nothing spiritual about it. It is backward.

  Sikhs do not have an ego. They wear turbans and keep their hair uncut because too many of them were not prepared to stand up for their faith during the latter end of the 17th century when they were confronted by the Islamist Mughals who were determined to convert the Indian population to Islam by the sword. They were commanded to stand up for their beliefs at all times and given five articles of visible faith so they were not tempted to say they were not Sikhs in times of hardship or extremis - stand out to stand up. Sikhs do not believe in Heaven or Hell but have a very strong martyrdom tradition and desire to serve humanity (e.g. all of their Sikh temples have free kitchens to serve anyone food no matter what religion if any a hungry person has).

  Sikhs have some of the least ego of any religious person I have ever dealt with. If they have it it’s not as apparent as the majority of Christians and the other followers abrahamic faiths.
